Jaundice & Hyperbilirubinemia

Preventable Harm

Jaundice (neo-natal hyperbilirubinemia) is a treatable condition for which newborns can be tested. It is characterized by the presence of too much bilirubin in the blood.

What is bilirubin? Bilirubin is the substance left behind when red blood cells break down. Newborn babies can have a difficult time processing bilirubin, causing it to build up in the bloodstream. When that occurs, a natural yellow pigment has the seemingly harmless effect of turning the baby's skin color yellow as well.

Unfortunately, undiagnosed and untreated jaundice is often anything but harmless.

At Jeffrey M. Goldberg Law Offices, we understand both the medical and human aspects of the birth injury and jaundice cases we handle, and we have earned a nationwide reputation for helping clients benefit to the fullest extent the law provides.

Our full-time registered nurse Margaret Oberts helps us to accomplish that goal, along with the full medical library we've built in our Chicago office. Our attorneys are committed to understanding the medicine behind these cases as well as, or better than, the medical experts testifying against our clients do.

When a newborn with jaundice and hyperbilirubinemia went untreated and suffered brain damage, our attorneys were successful in obtaining a structured settlement worth more than $35 million for our client.

An expectant mother presented at her hospital in Chicago for the delivery of her first child. Her physician was not present and the hospital's "house doctor", who had not been formally trained in obstetrics, was managing the labor with attending nurses. By the time the personal physician arrived the fetus had suffered a significant lack of oxygen and was delivered in a very depressed state. The baby developed cerebral palsy. On the eve of trial, the hospital and other defendants offered a global settlement with a present cash value in excess of $13,000,000.00 including some portions in cash and future payments that will support the child for life.
