JEFFREY GOLDBERG: We handle any type of personal injury, generally very significant cases only. Automobile accidents, product design, and we concentrate in medical malpractice birth injury cases. We do a lot of those all over the Midwest and have developed a significant background experience in that type of litigation.

As a child of the late 60s, I wanted to change the system, but I wanted to do it without burning draft cards or burning buildings, rather through the judicial system. I went to law school and was fortunate enough to get a job in a plaintiff's personal injury firm representing the underdog, the injured person, against the big corporations or employers that had caused that injury.

We're lawyers looking for justice. We view the scales of justice as an important tool, and it's our job to make sure the scales get fairly weighed for our clients so that justice is served.

The stress that people are up against after a significant injury is monumental. They first have to deal with the actual injury itself, and only thereafter do they realize the financial impact that it's going to have.

Our clients know that when we take on a case, we're not going to rest until it's resolved in their favor to the best of our ability. Knowing that someone else is looking at the financial issues allows them to focus on the healing, the physical therapy and getting back to their normal life.

An expectant mother presented at her hospital in Chicago for the delivery of her first child. Her physician was not present and the hospital's "house doctor", who had not been formally trained in obstetrics, was managing the labor with attending nurses. By the time the personal physician arrived the fetus had suffered a significant lack of oxygen and was delivered in a very depressed state. The baby developed cerebral palsy. On the eve of trial, the hospital and other defendants offered a global settlement with a present cash value in excess of $13,000,000.00 including some portions in cash and future payments that will support the child for life.
